My Korean Haul from Hong Kong and Taiwan!

November has been a month of glorious Kpop surprises for me. I'm beyond ecstatic for the much anticipated second announcement to Infinite's second world tour, as well as the recent announcement of Apink's North American tour! I'm making plans to see Infinite in Vancouver on January 7th, followed by Apink in LA on January 9th, and ending with Infinite in LA on January 10th. As this will probably be the last time I see Infinite (as I always say after I see Infinite), I have to make it the most memorable!

Besides the news of these concerts, my family also brought back some goodies for me from Asia! In Hong Kong, namely Sino Centre, my family got me a lot of Infinite-related merchandise: Paradise and Be Back LPs, 24 Hours Limited Version and all seven member versions, Infinite F Koi No Sign Normal Edition, Grow DVD, Collection Cards Vol.2 binder, The Time We Were Not In Love OST, and Lovelyz Lovelyz8 album. Included were a Lovelyz poster, a Collection Cards Vol.2 poster, a Japanese Dilemma DVD poster, and a Japanese double-sided Infinite F poster!

In Taiwan, my family got me some Korean socks, a random Taiwanese sample, and some Tony Moly products (Strawberry Mushroom Sugar Scrub, Golden Mushroom Mask Sheet, and Banana Hand Cream samples).

In the next couple of months, I'll be doing unboxing posts of all the Kpop items and Tony Moly items. I also plan to create a series of posts showing my entire Infinite collection. And of course, in January, I'll be writing my concert experiences!

[Update 2] Aberdeen Mall: Tony Moly and a Clothing Store

Just after the new year's I visited Aberdeen Centre in Vancouver, Canada again (original post here and an update here on the mall) and found a couple of really nice surprises! On the second level near the doors to the parking garage, I spotted a Tony Moly! I actually didn't know that they are slowly starting to open branches in North America, and they don't really have a website for their North American locations. I can't believe I found a Tony Moly so close to me now!

This store is very small and similar in layout to many other Korean cosmetic stores. It is a rectangle with displays of products (no endorsers) on the walls and an island in the center with more displays. There were signs on the storefront advertising that this is a grand opening with a special sale from December 25th to January 4th. Inside was very busy and there were workers floating around, handing customers with mini baskets to entice them to buy more. They had so many products on display, but I honestly only spent about a minute in there doing price checks. The products seem to be significantly more expensive than buying them in Korea obviously, but they're comparable to other Korean cosmetic stores in North America, but still more expensive that online. The blueberry lip balm was $9.50CAD, and the red apple, green apple, and tomato were all between $14CAD and $16CAD. It's still so refreshing to see a Tony Moly in Vancouver though, and Aberdeen Mall is finally becoming more like a real Asian mall that reflects those stores in Asia.

And also towards one end of the mall on the second floor near the food court is a clothing store, Kokko, with lots of designer brands that caught my attention.

The storefront printed brands on the window that I know Infinite has worn before. These brands include Balmain (Infinite has worn these during performances and also as their own clothes, like at the airport), Julius (the designer behind Infinite's Last Romeo outfit set...the Myungsoo cow outfit set...), Mastermind Japan (I saw Sungyeol wearing one of their shirts at his restaurant), Pierre Hardy (worn on stage and on their own), Raf Simons (Sunggyu and Woohyun who some at the airport), and Rick Owens (Sunggyu wears it often). Also peaking into the store, I see HBA (they've worn it for recent promotions in 2014) and Comme Des Garcons (Myungsoo wears this brand often).

Since I don't come to Aberdeen Centre too often, I feel like with each new visit there will be more and more great change! I can't wait to see what's here next time. UGH after coming back to the States, I look at the directory and see there's now also Artbox, a popular stationary store in Korea. Ugh next time I'll definitely check that out!

Tony Moly Floria Nutra-Energy Mask Sheet with Argan Oil Review

As Super Junior-M are the current endorsers for Tony Moly, they're on the cover of Tony Moly's Floria Nutra-Energy Mask Sheet with Argan Oil. The Floria line offers many skincare products, many of which are meant to provide either energy or whitening to the face. While this mask sheet isn't listed on Tony Moly's website, the other Floria Nutra-Energy products are meant to provide moisture, target wrinkles and create elasticity. This product is actually listed as "Not for sale," so I think these are only given as samples with purchases.

The backside provides illustrations and information in Korean and English. In English, it states that this mask is nutritious and energetic to give off a healthy face. The directions say to place and leave the mask on your face for 15 to 20 minutes, then remove.

This face mask sheet, like many others, is a large circle sheet with slits around the border. The holes are also large in proportion. After removing the sheet, there is still a lot of essence on my face. I use my fingers to tap in this excess essence for my skin to absorb it more quickly, and my face is fully dried after about three minutes.

The Pros

• The sheet comes very concentrated in its essence, with remaining essence still in the packaging.
• This mask sheet stays on my face very well.
• After tapping the essence on my face, it was quickly absorbed.
• My face has a healthy matte sheen afterwards and is subtly hydrated.
• This mask and its bag have a LOT of essence left, so I can refresh myself by wiping my neck and limbs and still have essence left over. There's a lot more left than other mask sheets I've tried.

The Cons

• This essence smells a bit like raw sourdough bread, which isn't really to my liking. It's a mild scent though, so it's quick to get used to it.
• The one-size-fits-all isn't very accommodating to most face sizes. The holes are very large and the overall circle shape is just too big.

Overall, I view this face mask sheet like all the other ones I've tried. While the scent could have been more pleasant, I did like how efficiently this essence absorbed into my skin. This mask sheet is decent, but I won't go out of my way to find one.

Tony Moly Timeless EGF Power Cream Review

While Tony Moly is known for its super cute packaging, they also have more high-end products, such as the Timeless EGF Power Cream, which I'll review a sample of here.

I had to look it up, but EGF stands for Epidermal Growth Factor, which heals and renews skin cells. The sample's front states that this cream is primarily for anti-wrinkle, whitening and skin power. More specifically, on the product's webpage, it states that using this product for one day the product creates smooth skin, 14 days creates firm skin, 28 days creates clear skin and 60 days rids wrinkles. This page also says that it is for all skin types, is an anti-aging cream highly concentrated with vitamins and nutritious oils, has a luxurious jelly consistency to tighten, even, hydrate, relieve and protect damaged and sensitive skin. It also says that this product should be used along with Tony Moly's snail care line and other EGF products. The directions online say to use an adequate amount on your face, then spread it and lightly tap it in for better absorption.

This product is a very thick and white cream with a subtle scent, a bit like Tony Moly's Floria line. Using this is like putting on a thick, transparent layer on my skin that feels silky afterwards. So, it's not as thick, heavy and waxy as the Missha Super Aqua Ultra Waterfull Cream or The Face Shop Olive Essential Cream.

The Pros

• This cream hydrates and moisturizes my skin very well.
• This is great for cold months as the cream feels like a light shield against the cold and dry air.
• When I used this right before bed, it still lasted until morning to create a smooth and even base for right before I apply BB cream.

The Cons

• None!

Overall, I really do like this face cream. It's heavy, but not as heavy as the other face creams I mentioned, so it's nice for the transition months when it's still a bit chilly or for cold winters. It's a great cream to use at night as it keeps my face hydrated until the following morning.

Tony Moly Red Apple Hand Cream Review

Tony Moly is known for its super naturalistic and adorable food packaging. I'm a sucker for the brand's fruits, so I had to get the Red Apple Hand Cream! According to Tony Moly's English webpage (which is very functional and informative for English readers), this hand cream is for all skin types and uses honey and butter to moisturize skin, so it's recommended especially for the fall and winter seasons. Apple acid extract is also a key ingredient that relieves hands of dead skin cells and dry cuticles. And lastly, this cream has a soft, custard texture with a sweet apple scent.

The container of this cream is simply a shrunken version of Tony Moly's Red Appletox Honey Cream, as this hand cream contains 30 g of product. From top to bottom, this glossy apple has a deep orange-to-red ombré effect to look as perfect and realistic as possible.

Here is the bottom of the container. In Korean, it states and ingredients and other information.

This container has a screw-off lid that, once opened, reveals a sturdy plastic lid to protect cream from coming out.

The cream smells like freshly washed apples; it's not overly sweet or strong, but rather refreshing. It has an opaque pale yellow hue. This product is very creamy and glides on my hands very smoothly. The amount in my palm is the perfect amount for moisturizing both hands thoroughly. The directions online say to rub over hands, then tap the product into your hand until there's no more sticky residue. I didn't really feel this stickiness in the first place though.

The Pros

• The packaging...need I say more? ;)
• The scent is refreshing and sweet, and not sugarcoated.
• While the product is rather creamy, it's not too heavy or light.
• It moisturizes very well!
• There is no greasy feeling afterwards; after a few minutes, the cream has mostly absorbed into my skin and I can comfortably use my hands on the computer and whatnot.

The Cons

• Tony Moly's fruit products never disappoint!

Overall, I love anything with cute packaging and Tony Moly never disappoints in this department! A miniature apple will look great along with my other fruity products. Also I love this hand cream for its creamy texture, scent and effective moisturization.

Tony Moly Intense Care Snail Essence Review

While Tony Moly is famous for its affordable line of realistic fruit products, it also has a more high end line of Snail Care.  This line includes different types of skincare products, as well as hand cream, BB cream, lip treatment, and more.  All the products come in streamline and elegent packaging, rather than the produce-shaped packaging.  Here I'll review the Intense Care Snail Essence.

According to Tony Moly's website, this product hydrates, moisturizes, repairs and brightens skin.  This essence is targeted at those with pimples and with dry and dull skin.  It contains snail slime, which is very interesting and unique. On the sample, the print states that this essence is for anti-wrinkle, whitening and nutrition. I don't know why the website and sample list two completely different effects.

The essence has a clear gel consistency, but more runny. Like slime, it leaves a slightly sticky residue after applying it. The amount in my palm is enough for an ample layer on my cheeks, nose and chin. I suggest applying the product in thin layers, because the skin doesn't absorb it quickly.

Pros

• There is a subtle, pleasant lemon scent while applying the essence to my face, and it fades quickly so the scent doesn't become overwhelming.
• There is no irritation or discomfort, even on my sensitive areas with zits.
• The essence feels very light on my face.
• The product easily spreads, and a little goes a long way.

Cons

• I suggest using this like a night cream.  I tried using it as a primer, but the essence takes too long to be absorbed and therefore dilutes additional products I use.
• As mentioned before, there is a slightly sticky residue, which may bother people.
• It takes awhile for the skin to completely absorb this product.  I applied several layers and it took around an hour for it to fully absorb.

Overall, this is a pleasant gel to use right before bed.  It does moisturize and my skin feels smooth, but I don't think it'll greatly repair super dry skin.  I will continue to use these samples because Tony Moly tends to offer this one often, but I probably wouldn't buy it.

My Korean Haul!

While I was trudging through dead week and finals, my parents were enjoying themselves in none other than...Korea! As my parents are the sweetest despite my envying them, they gifted me with so many beauty products and Kpop merchandise!  Here is a quick look at my haul:

The worker at the Kpop store offered my parents so many free, official posters!  He gave one BtoB's Press Play, Exo's XOXO, both versions of Infinite's Destiny, Infinite's Infinitize Mission, and asked my parents what else I liked. They managed to list IU and CNBlue, so I also got IU's Modern Times and CNBlue's Present, which just came out!

I'm sorry I can't review these stores, but do expect lots of reviews these upcoming weeks!

Tony Moly Latte Art Cappuccino Cream-In Scrub Review

While Tony Moly is famous for it's fruit and egg shaped packaging, the brand also has another line known as Latte Art with equally adorable products.  The Latte Art line has coffee inspired products, such as the Cappuccino Cream-In Scrub and the Milk-Tea Morning Pack, which I'll review later.

The front and sides emphasize how this scrub changes color while in use, showing that it's working. The backside has information in Korean while the bottom has information in English.

The bottom has an elaborate description and instructions in English.  The description explains all of the benefits of using this scrub, including removing dry and dead skin, providing nutrients, cleaning out pores, firming skin, slimming facial contour and leaving a smooth and glossy finish.  Much of this seems a bit bogus, but it does work as a general scrub for me.  The instructions say to rub the scrub on your face until the scrub changes color, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

The packaging, not the product itself, really won me over.  The "stirring spoon" comes straight out from the top and can be used to stir and scoop up the scrub!  I guess this feature is more for those who want to be sanitary to scoop out the scrub, but then the spoon slot will get all covered in excess scrub, which isn't good.  Also the top is adorable, showing cute latte art. 

 

The bottom of this "cup" has information in Korean and the date of production.  To open, simply screw off the top portion.  Sadly despite having a protective slip, a bit of product still spilled into the inside of the lid.   The top right photo reveals that the product isn't full to begin with.

The scrub itself is very coagulated.  You can kind of see that where I dipped the scrub, there is still an indent in the cup one day later.  The scent is of unsweetened coffee (maybe that's how cappuccino smells like?), not as strong or sweet as the SkinFood body scrub.  It reminds me a bit of hard coffee candy.  This subtle scent lasts while the scrub is still on my face, creating a soothing and relaxing environment.  The scrub first appears translucent (top left photo), then transparent once spread (bottom left), and finally opaque white (right) after rubbing it on my face.  This transformation quickly takes place as soon as my fingers heat up and massage the scrub.  I usually don't add any water and treat the scrub like a lotion.  Because the scrub is already so mild, I wouldn't want to dilute the scrub.  The scrub is mostly a smooth gel-like consistency with sparse exfoliating beads that are very gentle on the skin.  The amount in the bottom left photo covers about 2/5 of my face.

Pros

• The packaging is way too adorable.
• The scent is heavenly!
• The color-changing effect is unique and easily indicates when the scrub has taken effect.
• My face instantly feels and appears very clean and healthily matte (not glossy).
• It seems that this cup will last me awhile.
• The scrub is very gentle, perfect for an everyday cleanser.

Cons

• I honestly have nothing to complain about!

Overall, I love this product!  Not only is the packaging adorable, the scrub itself is lovely.  I use it when I am very tired and just want a quick face wash to clean my face.  Also this scrub is very mild, like a gentle cleanser, yet effective for cleaning my face.

Tony Moly Peach and Cherry Mini Lip Balm Reviews

Tony Moly is known for their cute packaging, especially their fruit-shaped products.  Despite having so many other lip balms, I couldn't pass up getting yet another lip balm in peach and cherry containers!  The peach has no color while the cherry, like the blueberry, does have a punch of color.  Here are my thoughts on these two products.

Peach Mini Lip Balm
This lip balm comes in a matte, almost spherical container that has a pink to beige ombre effect.  The packaging mimics the Asian peach so well, just like the matching peach hand cream.  This peach balm also smells like the peach hand cream, a strong artificial peach scent like those sugary peach gummy rings.

You can get an idea on the size of this balm compared to my hand.  The balm has a subtle peachy, nude hue to it but once on the lips, it gives off a transparent sheen meant purely for moisturizing, not for color.  The peach balm focuses on using peach extract to moisten and plump lips while soften dead skin cells. Like the blueberry balm, this peach balm is very solid and you need the warmth of your finger to melt the product.  Each swipe of the fingertip also gets a very thin layer of balm, so you need several swipes before getting a decent amount.

Pros

• This balm is so moisturizing!  For all of my other products, I've always needed unchapped, healthy lips before using them.  But for this balm, it actually heals my chapped and dry lips with just one use.
• The packaging is so adorable.
• The size is great for travel.

Cons

• The solidness of this product is a hassle if you're in a hurry because you need to apply the balm several times before using it thoroughly.
• Some people are against dipping their fingers in balm due to it being unsanitary, but that's the price you must pay for such cute packaging!

Cherry Mini Lip Balm

This cherry balm is shaped like a very ripe red, glossy cherry.  It's so realistic that it is even a darker shade at the top and has a dark green rubber stem sprouting from the top.  This cherry flavor has a subtle citrus scent.

This balm is surprisingly softer than the peach balm.  It melts much easier and with one swipe, more product comes out.  This balm does have color; it is a soft, reddish orange shade.

However once out of its packaging, the color becomes a translucent pinkish orange.  On my skin (top right photo), the orange pigment is still noticeable.  Once blended in (bottom right photo), the pigment fades and produces a very faint, translucent orange.  This shade of orange on naturally pink lips is rather unnoticeable, so it takes quite a few layers before the orange is visible on the lips.  Yet this orange is very natural looking and flattering, despite it being an uncommon lip color.

Pros

• You need many layers before seeing any color.  This may seem like a con, but I see it as a pro because you can choose the shade and intensity of orange.
• The packaging is so realistic and adorable.  I'm definitely displaying it on my bathroom counter.

Cons

• The packaging is adorable, however the rubber stem seems fragile and therefore I wouldn't want to bring it with me while I'm out and about.
• This balm is purely for the shade, not for moisture.  You need to have unchapped, hydrated lips before using this balm.

Both balms are similar in size and shape and fit nicely in the palm of my hand.  The small size, yet abundant balm, is convenient to bring around for the day in a purse.  The packaging comes with a small sticker with Korean characters.  Annoyingly the peach balm has a date printed on its side, tampering with its naturalistic quality.  The lid takes up half of the packaging, and you turn it to remove the lid.  Inside is a thin plastic slip to protect the balm.

Overall the packaging is enough to win me over.  I love looking at them on my counter, along with my other Tony Moly products.  Also the peach balm is surprisingly super moisturizing, so I can use it as a first layer before applying other lip products, like the cherry balm.

Update: Tony Moly Mini Blueberry Lip Balm

It's been awhile since I used my Tony Moly blueberry, so I wanted to do a quick update on the gorgeous product.  Here's the link to my review and full description of the blueberry.  Since I last used my blueberry a few months ago, the weather has been getting much hotter, affecting the product.  My lip balm has been cooped up in my small, stuffy room while the temperature has been in the high 70s and mid 80s (Fahrenheit).  Before my room was probably 20 to 30 degrees colder, and my blueberry lip balm was very solid to the point where I had to use my finger to push and scoop some product out.

Now, when I opened my product this morning, there were condensation droplets on the surface of the balm.  The balm was very easy to scoop up this time, with product easily sliding out due to its newly slick and smooth consistency.  It reminds me a lot like butter that has been nuked in the microwave.  Due to the weather, my lip balm has been melting to the perfect consistency.  However, I'm afraid if it will get hotter, the product will be too liquidy!  In this first photo, you can see the condensation and the smoothness of where I had used the balm.

In this photo, you can't really see the droplets but I wanted to show the balm in the light so you can see  its true color.  I didn't want to mislead anyone to think that the color had changed!

So this blog is to let you know that the weather does affect beauty products and to store your products in a suitable, room temperature area.  I'm sure many consider this as a common sense fact, but I'm a beauty beginner and I'm slowly learning...

Tony Moly Peach Anti-Aging Hand Cream Review

Tony Moly is known for its adorable, realistic beauty products.  This cute hand cream is no exception!  According to online descriptions, the Peach Anti-Aging Hand Cream contains peach and apricot extracts and other vitamins and ingredients to improve wrinkles and aging.  The result is supposed to be smoother, softer and whiter hands.

This peach is about life size, fitting in the palm of my hand.  The packaging itself is very similar to its nature counterpart.  The finish is matte, mimicking peach fuzz.  The color gradient, from cream to peachy pink from bottom to top, is also like a peach seen in Asian culture (red envelopes, cartoons, etc.).

The top half of the peach twists off, revealing a flat, white lid.  Surprisingly the lid doesn't have 'Tony Moly' imprinted, but instead is just a flushed lid.  This is to prevent the cream from spilling if the product weren't placed upright.

The color is white, from seen inside the peach, there is a slight, pale pink hue.  The texture is very rich, creamy and smooth.  This hand cream is definitely very moisturizing for even the driest, chapped hands, making my hands feel very smooth and soft despite previously being dry and rough.

Pros

• The packaging is too adorable!
• 30 grams is a lot for using just on the hands, so this can go a long way.
• The peach and apricot scent is very strong and lovely.  I smelled it right after I opened the lid, it's so intense!  Also with my hands typing, I can still smell the cream.
• This cream has been ranked as my go-to cream for when my hands are super dry and seeking moisture.  I'm amazed at just how healthy, smooth and soft (not to mention yummy-smelling!) my hands are right now.

Cons

• Maybe if you're sensitive to fragrance, then this product could be a problem.  But I see nothing wrong with this hand cream!

Overall, I love this product.  It is definitely another win for Tony Moly!  The sugary fruit scent reminds me of peach gummy rings, which is pleasing.  I didn't actually know that this product is supposed to whiten your hands until I read up on it, so I really hope the cream does just this.  This cream already moisturizes my hands to perfection, so if it whitens as well, I'd be a super happy camper!

Markham: Pacific Mall

Pacific Mall is a three story Chinese mall located in Markham, a suburb of Toronto. Majority of the retail is on the ground floor, with miscellaneous tenants selling electronic accessories, Asian (mainly Korean and Japanese) beauty products and Asian CDs and DVDs (both legit and counterfeit). Many of these stalls are random, unheard-of shops, but the chain brands include The Face Shop, Holika Holika, and to my surprise, soon Tony Moly! Here I'll highlight the shops I went to and what I bought.

Broadcast
This store occupies a corner spot, so despite there being hundreds of repetitive shops throughout the mall, it isn't too hard to find Broadcast if you just circle the perimeter. To further stand out, there are kpop posters against the exterior, but I'm not sure if they're for sale.

Out of all the shops at this mall selling Asian CDs and DVDs, I think Broadcast has the best (and is probably the only shop with a) reputation of selling only authentic discs. There are rows of fully packed shelves containing kpop and kpop CDs and concert DVDs, as well as Asian dramas and other genres. They carry newly released media, as well as older ones like Ss501. The latest kpop CDs and DVDs are at the front counter. There are two older Cantonese ladies running the shop, who were very helpful. Though they were out of the Infinite CDs I was looking for, she directed me to other popular and highly demanded CDs. She was more knowledgeable than I thought, but I did have to correct her about a few things.

There are also not authentic Kpop merchandise, such as scrolls, mouse pads (roughly $10), playing cards (Infinite's for $15.99), notepads, keychains, pens, and more.  Just a side note, no photos allowed inside the store. Whoops, I only saw the sign after I had started taking photos.

The Face Shop

The store is very simplistic and pristine with its glossy white panels.

Sadly a Kim Hyun Joong cutout doesn't greet customers at this location, but his face is still plastered throughout the store. The Face Shop is really using Hyun Joong as the face of the brand, even placing his face on the mirrors and business card. The workers are also friendly and helpful, so don't be afraid to approach them. Sometimes there's no worker at the register, however, so just seek one of the workers.

I wanted to buy something from The Face Shop despite not actually wanting any of their products, so I just bought their cheapest products. I chose three face mask sheets, costing $1.70 and $2 each. Sadly my purchase didn't come with any samples.

Holika Holika

This Holika Holika location is the only one outside of Asia, so I was thrilled to visit this one. The layout is simplistic like The Face Shop, but the storefront has two gorgeous Jung Il Woo cutouts greeting customers.

I had to take photos with them, as they'll be the closest I'll get to the real thing! Around the store are little advertisements of Jung Il Woo holding various Holika products and labels of his recommended products. Sistar also endorses the brand, but there was only a poster of the group on the side of the store. Prices are fairly expensive compared to other brands. The workers are friendly and helpful when I asked her to show me their lip balms; she ended up walking me to all of their lip products and describing each to me.

My first purchase (top) was the milk lip butter and nail polish, which came with a free sample. My second purchase (bottom right) was the strawberry lip butter and face mask sheet, and sadly that didn't come with a free sample. It may just be the worker, because during my first purchase the first worker sent me off without giving me a sample but then a second worker peered over and got one for me before I left. I think it just depends on the worker.

Debbie
This shop carries various Korean cosmetics. There are workers of different Asian nationalities, so if you're not confident with English, you might be able to communicate in Cantonese or Korean. They are all friendly and helped me test out products by getting the product and placing of on my hand themselves. One customer was even getting a makeover done. The prices seem a bit more expensive, but they can give you more samples as a compromise.

I ended up buying Tony Moly's Tomatox and Silky Smooth Balm and received samples for a full skincare routine that included four different products, which she determined by touching my cheek for my skin type, and she let me choose from a whitening and natural BB cream. All of my samples and the bag were from Missha, despite not buying any from that brand.

I was so ecstatic to see my most favorite skincare brand about to open a store in North America! Though the glass walls are boarded with construction paper, it appears that construction is almost finished. According to the work permit posted on the front door, construction period is supposed to end on April 2nd, which is coming up!

I also took a sneak peek inside and can already see JYJ endorsing!
